The portrait of the much loved Australian actor who died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in New York earlier this year is equal favourite with bookies to win the coveted 2008 Archibald prize.
From an original field of 700, now reduced to 40 finalists, Sporting bet Australia is offering odds of $7 for Vincent Fantauzzo’s portrait of Ledger to win the portraiture prize.
The actor sat for the Melbourne artist only weeks before his death.
Sportingbet CEO Michael Sullivan said the publicity and the fact Ledgerwes so wideLv admired had obviously contributed to punters re aching for their wallets.
“There’s no doubt that punters are tapping into the wave of emotion that swept the world. But our in-house art experts tell us that the Ledger work is a genuine contender,” Sullivan said. “It’s a piece of history.”
